Capirona

Capirona, or Mulateiro, is known as the ‘Tree of Youth’ in Amazon River villages due to the effect of its resin on skin. The tree has a defining quality of shedding its bark twice a year, clearing away fungi and bacteria similar to how humans shed our skin every month.

During these periods the outer layer of the tree is able to be harvested. Traditionally, the extracted resin available during these periods is prepared in topical remedies for cosmetic purposes intended to moisturize skin and also as a treatment for wounds or insect bites.

Testing of the resin has identified tannins, phenols, natural anti-oxidant flavonoids, and organic acids with antibacterial, antifungal, insecticidal, and antioxidant activity.

The Canopy Medicine Skincare team harvests the resin of Capirona with a patent pending ethical technique allowing the tree to regenerate and thrive with the potential to be harvested again in the future.
